  • Current University of Minnesota Graduate Student in GIS or related field
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and learn quickly
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and a strong commitment to provide superior support to the polar science community
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others
Preferred Qualifications
  • Focus in Remote Sensing, Cartography, Imagery Analysis, or Computer Science
  • 1 year of previous GIS job experience and/or study
  • Remote Sensing experience/expertise
  • Interest in Polar Science initiatives and collaborations
  • Ability to work full-time over the summer
  • Customer Service experience

About the Job

The Polar Geospatial Center (PGC) is looking for a graduate student in GIS or a related field to fulfill a wide range of duties. The position duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting polar researchers from other institutions in obtaining and manipulating imagery,
  • Creating custom map products,
  • Manipulating and editing geographic datasets, and
  • Managing long-term mapping, and data storage projects with undergraduate student assistants

Specific skills will be taught on the job. The applicant should possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn quickly. Work at the Polar Geospatial Center is fast-paced and constantly changing, so the applicant must have exceptional organizational skills and the ability to work independently and with others.

Position schedule: 20 hrs/week (50% RA) during the academic year, with the possibility to increase up to 100% RA during the summer.

The PGC provides geospatial support, mapping, and GIS/remote sensing solutions to researchers and logistics teams in the polar science community. We collaborate with scientists to complete their research goals in a safe, timely, and efficient manner by providing a service which most groups do not have the resources or expertise to complete. Our goal is to introduce new, state-of-the-art techniques from the geospatial field to effectively solve problems in the least mapped places on Earth.

About the Department

The N.H. Winchell School of Earth & Environmental Sciences lies within the College of Science & Engineering. The School is the umbrella under which resides the Institute for Rock Magnetism, the Limnological Research Center (National Lacustrine Core Facility & Continental Scientific Drilling Coordination Office), the Minnesota Geological Survey, and the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, including the Polar Geospatial Center.

We are located on the University of Minnesota Saint Paul campus.
